The Burneys: Crossroads, Revolutions, and Transformations
New Brunswick, New Jersey
June 12-13, 2025
The Burney Society of North America, a group of scholars and serious lay readers interested in Frances Burney’s works and dedicated to furthering knowledge about Burney and her family, will hold its annual general meeting and conference at the Rutgers Inn and Conference Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, June 12-13, 2025. Founded in 1766 as Queens College, Rutgers is the eighth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, predating the American Revolution by 10 years. New Jersey itself is a “Crossroads of the Revolution” (a.k.a. The American War of Independence) and is preparing to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
In recognition of this setting, we invite proposals for papers, panels, or roundtables that discuss any topic related to representations or explorations of crossroads, transformation, or revolution in the works or experiences of Frances Burney and members of the Burney family, or in Burney Studies.
Please send 250-word proposals for papers and panels to Elizabeth Porter and Catherine Keohane at BurneyNA@gmail.com by 17 February 2025. Submissions from graduate students are especially welcome. Participants will be notified by 1 March 2025. It is not necessary to be a member of the Burney Society to submit a proposal, but presenters at the Conference must be members. Visit the Burney Society’s website for more information about the Society and membership.
